“You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
~Maya Angelou

Hello and welcome!

Ever feel uninspired or lacking imagination as a fiction writer? You are not alone. All creative writers suffer this dreaded state from time to time. Maintaining a high level of creativity week after week can be challenging; yet it is essential for good storytelling.

Here you’ll find essays, challenges, and exercises meant to spark your creative juices and keep them flowing. You’ll find guidance and tips on the components that aid creativity such as curiosity, confidence, and consistent writing habits. I also drop occasional pieces on the craft of fiction writing such as plot and characterization.

You don’t have to be a professional writer to join in. Anyone who enjoys writing fiction is welcome. And even if you don’t write fiction—maybe you’re just curious—you’re invited too. If you’ve come this far that probably means YOU. So join us. I want Creativity for Fiction Writers to be a place where everyone feels welcomed and encouraged to share their work, thoughts, and ideas about writing fiction.

About me—

I’ve been a full-time published author since 1994. Over that time, I have had several books published, including YOU NEVER KNOW (Amistad | HarperCollins), my first domestic suspense novel. A photo-essay book on stylish black adults age 50+ was published in December 2023, which I wrote in cooperation with photographer Milton Washington, titled STEPPING OUT, (Clarkson Potter | Crown). My work has been published globally, hitting the bestseller lists of the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, and Baltimore Sun among many other publications.

Of the twelve books I’ve written, two are nonfiction and nine are novels. You can learn more about them here. My second suspense novel is currently in production.

I was born with a mild hearing impairment but have never let that hold me back. After progressively losing more hearing, several years ago I had a cochlear implant and it restored much of what I had lost. I believe that the challenges of dealing with a hearing loss helped make me stronger, more resilient, and more determined to reach my goals.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, creating jewelry, and traveling.

More about me and my work can be found on my website here.
