Behind the Chapters
With Connie Briscoe
“You don't start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking it's good stuff, and then gradually you get better at it.
That's why I say one of the most valuable traits is persistence.”
― Octavia E. Butler
Hello and welcome!
You’ve seen their novels sitting prominently on bookstore shelves. You’ve come across the promotions on social media. You’ve heard the staggering numbers: 5,000 copies sold; 50,000 copies; 500,000+! How did the authors do it? How did they create such complex characters? How did they dream up with those vibrant settings and compelling plots?
It didn’t happen overnight—not for me, not for others. It took a lot of dedication and time, which you usually don’t see or hear much about.
I’ve been a published author for more than thirty years. In Behind the Chapters, you get a look behind the scenes . . . or behind the chapters . . . into my life and work as a bestselling fiction author. The highs and lows, ins and outs.
This is where I share my journey and all that I’ve learned over the years with you. Everything is created here with an eye toward enlightening storytellers. If you’re looking to become a better writer or to get published or if you’re just plain curious about writing, this is the place for you.
I encourage you to check me out on Notes here on Substack, where I post insights, inspiration, and candid thoughts about writing fiction. These are brief reflections on writing that don't quite fit into a full newsletter but I feel are worthy of sharing.

About me—
I’ve been writing since 1994. Over that time, I’ve had nine novels, one novella, and two non-fiction books published.
My work has been published globally, hitting the bestseller lists of the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, and Baltimore Sun, among many other publications.
I was born with a mild hearing impairment but I never let that hold me back. After progressively losing more hearing, several years ago I had a cochlear implant and it restored much of what I had lost. The challenges of dealing with hearing loss helped make me more resilient and more determined to reach my goals as a writer.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, creating jewelry, and traveling.
Generous words from readers—
