Hey writers,
A few things I thought would perk up your Sunday scrolling—
Beyond the prose, inspiration, and bravery needed to get words on the page, we writers must also consider publishers, agents, editors, and more. Here’s a short list of publications that provide support and insight on all of that as well as paid writing opportunities. And they’re right here on Substack, so you don’t have to venture far.
Publishing Confidential
A publishing industry vet with over two decades of experience in publicity and marketing offers insight. Recent newsletter/blog post titles include: “How Much Does Publicity Cost?” and “Have Celebrity Book Clubs Peaked?”
How to Glow in the Dark
Book publishing advice for writers of fiction and nonfiction from a literary agency specializing in literary fiction and nonfiction for adult readers. Recent titles include: “Agents Aren’t Biting on My Query. When Should I Give Up?” and “Everyone Passed on Your Book. Now What?”
Agents and Books
All about literary agents and publishers. Recent titles: “Can Literary Agents Change Literature?” and “Why I’m Not Anxious About Publication Day.”
Write, Period
An extensive and eclectic list of paid writing opportunities in literary journals, anthologies, and magazines. Plus writing fellowships, prizes, and more. Updated monthly. Example opportunities: Prude Magazine, New York Foundation for the Arts, Speculative Literature Foundation, and Strange Horizons (Afro-surrealism Special Issue).
Thanks for this great list.
Thanks for this timely read. I was in conversation with someone this morning about the need to approach querying in a different way. Intentional networking and relationship-building have got to yield superior results to traditional querying alone! Coupling the two with items on your list can be a game-changer for me.
