Announcing Our First Creative Writing Challenge
Starting March 6, Creativity for Fiction Writers will begin its first four-week challenge, and we’ll explore settings in fiction writing. Whether describing a room or building a world, challenge participants will come away with a deeper understanding of how to create an imaginative sense of place in novels and short stories. It’s free to participate and you can join in anytime.
Setting involves much more than just describing the backdrop of a scene. The best setting descriptions capture readers and draw them into the story. They set the mood and atmosphere and support the plot. They define a sense of time or era such as the present day or a period in history. We will cover all of this in the challenge as you slowly build an inspired scene, one that you can work into your novel or short story. Or you can simply use the exercises as an opportunity to sharpen your understanding of creating scenes.
During the four-week challenge, you can expect lessons or essays on settings as well as accompanying writing exercises to be posted weekly on Creativity for Fiction Writers and they will be available to everyone. If you’re a subscriber (even a free one) they’ll also be delivered directly to your inbox. You can complete the challenge exercises totally in private if you wish. Or you can share your writing with others in the comments here online. I will do my best to respond to all comments and questions and I’ll also encourage participants to engage with each other. That way we can all benefit.
Although the exercises in this first challenge will be open to everyone, future writing challenges will be available only to paid subscribers. I anticipate three to four creativity challenges a year covering different topics. Become a paid subscriber if you want to be sure to have access to all of them. As of now the cost is only $5.00/monthly or $50/year. I hope you’ll join us!
I go into more detail about the challenge in this post here including exactly what we’ll cover each week of the challenge. Or you can dive straight into Exercise 1 here. I look forward to having you join us as we explore crafting captivating scenes in our fiction writing.
